Happy Birthday

As I was walking back from my History 221 Recitation today, November 19th, 2008, this song came on my iPod. "Happy Birthday," by Flipsyde, is a song talking about the unfortunate loss of a child before birth due to abortion, and all the possibilities that could've happened throughout his/her life. Flipsyde, the rapper, orates about the regret he holds for making such a decision, and how he thinks about it every year when the baby's birthday arrives. The first verse had a profound effect on myself, as I lost all track of where I was on campus while walking. Until the song came to and end, I was in a daze as I was entrenched with the deep lyrics this song presents to the listener.

Verse #1: "Please accept my apologies, wonder what would have been / Would you've been a little angle or an angel of sin? / Tom-boy running around, hanging with all the guys. / Or a little tough boy with beautiful brown eyes? / I payed for the murder before they determined the sex / Choosing our life over your life meant your death / And you never got'a chance to even open your eyes / Sometimes I wonder as a fetus if you fought for your life?...

First and foremost, wow, this almost made me cry the first time I listened to it. How he displays his apologies to the child that HE chose to murder (abortion) in order to save himself and make his life just a little easier. The fact that he chose to take a life of a child in order for him to be able to sleep at night eats away at him, and this emotional sorrow is evident throughout the entire song.
