Only God Knows Why
Over the course of the five and a half minutes, Kid Rock reflects on his life; primarily, the repercussions he has had to endure since becoming a musical superstar. He questions why he acts the way he does, and why he has done some of the things he has done during his career.
“People don’t know about the things I say I do, they don’t understand about the shit that I have been through. Its been so long, since I’ve been home; I’ve been gone, I’ve been gone for way too long….Oh somehow I know there’s more to life than this.”
The first time I heard this verse, I was really hit hard by the lyrics. Kid Rock explains how his fan base/audience only gets to see his works of art through concerts/albums/music videos; but we rarely, if ever, get to dive into the real Kid Rock and see how he lives. We are unaware of some of the things he may have to done to get where he is today. We are not told in People of the stories and events he regrets, and this song lets us know that.
He also mentions that he has not been home in quite some time, this can be taken in a couple different ways. Quite literally, depending on how long he spends on tour, months can go by before he gets to see his home again. On the other hand, in a more metaphorical sense, it could mean that Kid Rock has not returned to his innocent lifestyle that he once had before he become famous.
In addition, Rock somberly expresses to the listener that “there is more to life than this,” in which we get the sense that even though he has more material/ luxurious possessions than most people could ever dream of, he still has an enormous void in his life that he cannot seem to fill.
