“You’re born alone/ you die alone/ the rest is yours to fill the gap.”
This is one of the opening lines of the song “Stranger Than Fiction,” by Five Finger Death Punch. Quite frankly, I love this line. I first listened (not to be mistaken with heard) this lyrical phrase on my way home today from St. Louis, when I was just resting in the car with my iPod on.
The context that comes with line is interesting to think about. “You’re born alone/ you die alone/ the rest is yours to fill to fill the gap,” first and foremost in its literal form, implies that as a human being you enter and leave this world by yourself, with the accompaniment of no one else beside you. By telling the audience “the rest is yours to fill the gap,” Five Finger Death Punch is simply telling us to go out and live your life to the way you intend. You do not have to follow any guidelines, but rather, spend the time you have on this earth by making memories you’ll never forget and creating relationships you will never break.
